Gearing up for Guate (by Todd)

We have researched Guatemala and Belize up and down, looking for the places, sights, and activities that sound most interesting to us. Mainly, we just want to get some warm weather and do some diving in! Heading out over Christmas & New Years is likely to be high season, so we've made reservations and plans for nearly every step of the way, trying not to leave much to chance.

Fortunately we were able to use mileage to get two one-way flights: into Guatemala and home from Belize. That was the easy part. At least I really enjoy figuring out the rest, so despite challenges we got it done. Here's what we settled on:

  • Guatemala: Lake Atitlan
  • Guatemala: Antigua
  • Guatemala: Flores / Tikal
  • Belize: San Ignacio
  • Belize: Caye Caulker

Missed the cut in Guatemala: Semuc Champey, Livingston. Missed the cut in Belize: Hopkins, Placencia.

In particular on our last stop, Caye Caulker in Belize, we must have called about 30 hostels and hotels before finding a place that had availability over New Years. And the reviews on TripAdvisor make it sound like a 50/50 proposition, so we're holding out hope for the good side of that chance!
